Private House Landscape Design: 5 Steps to a Beautiful Garden

Private House Landscape Design: 5 Steps to a Beautiful Garden

A short post about landscape design on our Instagram account was loved by our followers... We were flooded with questions and demands for a continuation. We won't keep you waiting – the continuation is written, and the questions are answered.

In this simple and concise guide – private house landscape design – I outlined step by step where to start and how to achieve the most effective result, whether you plan to hire a professional team or create the landscape design on your own.

Many believe that landscape design is primarily about choosing plants for your garden and backyard... I want to dispel that myth – that is completely not the case. If you want a beautiful, meticulously planned plot that brings both joy and practical value, you should go not to a plant specialist, but to an experienced architect. Therefore, I offer you a step-by-step guide on how to design your dream plot or what actions to expect from professionals.

Step-by-step plan from an architect – from a blank slate to a stunning garden

Step one – site analysis

A detailed analysis of the site you want to develop will allow you to correctly position all functional zones, correct shortcomings, and highlight advantages.

What do you need to know for a comprehensive analysis?

Plot shape Topography Utilities availability Groundwater presence Soil type

This is the very foundation. Some assessments you can perform on your own, while others require specialized services.

Step two – zoning the territory

So, you have the survey results listed above. What should you do with them? - ANALYZE and use them to the maximum benefit for your future plot.

It is the analysis that will help you arrange all functional zones not only correctly, but also without compromises to your comfort.

For simplicity, I would divide all functional zones into 3 segments: the living zone and its components, the utility zone and its components, and the recreation zone. For each segment, make a list of features that will definitely be on your site. For example: living zone - house, terrace, veranda, patio. Utility zone – driveway, garage, kitchen garden, outbuildings, summer kitchen, barbecue. And recreation zone – swimming pool, playground, gazebo.

Step three – defining boundaries

Each zone should be separated and designated on your site, so you will need to use zoning elements. For this, you can use: fences (both decorative and standard), hedges, pathways, flower beds, borders, etc.

As you can see, this is how various structures (flowerbeds, planters, small architectural forms) and walkways (connecting all zones into a unified whole) naturally begin to appear on your plan alongside functional zones.

Step four – utility networks

You now know where and which zones will be on your plot, and now is the time to consider how you will maintain them. You will need water, sewerage, lighting. Moreover, an essential component such as drainage cannot be overlooked.

On your plan, you will mark where pipes, channels, or cables should run. The key is to arrange everything so that individual systems do not interfere with each other or obstruct your gardening and landscaping work. And even if this is accomplished 100%, it is still best to ensure utilities are protected from accidental damage.

Step five – selecting plants

As you can see, plants are definitely not the most important element in a good garden... you cannot build a good house without a solid foundation... you cannot landscape a garden without running water... All of this is now on your plan, so it is the perfect time to choose which plants you want to see in your garden.

Here are several criteria for selecting greenery:

Will the plants bloom (flowering flora requires extra care and attracts insects) Will the plants bear fruit During which season the plants bloom and bear fruit

Growth and blooming cycle (annuals, perennials) Suitability for our climate and soil

As you can see, I have briefly outlined the main steps toward a beautiful, well-thought-out plot that is effortless to live in and enjoy. Believe me, even if you hire specialists, it is worth looking into the details yourself – what exactly you want to see in your garden... This is, above all, your home and your garden, so the expertise and craftsmanship of professionals should be directed toward bringing your unique dream to life.
